AF commemorates 73rd International Human Rights Day
Commemorating the day, Human Rights Defenders, Civil Society Organizations, representatives from Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, members from civil society organizations and media gathered together to reiterate their commitment to protecting the inalienable rights proclaimed by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR), including the right to life, liberty, security of person, freedom from torture, among others. The rally commenced from Bhrikutimandap and concluded at Shanti Batika, Ratnapark.
The Rally was concluded with statements from Roshna Khadka (President, Collective Campaign for Peace (COCAP) and coordinator of 13th National Human Rights Magna Meet Organising Committee), Top Bahadur Magar (Chairperson, National Human Rights Commission), and Jitram Lama (President, NGO Federation of Nepal). The speakers highlighted the importance of the right to equality and freedom as a foundation for sustainable peace and prosperity. Further, the speakers expressed that existing impunity is one of the major challenges in victims’ access to justice.
In addition, to celebrate the historic day, AF took a lead in organizing the rallies, discussion programs, candlelight vigils cross the country (particularly in the provincial headquarters) in coordination with local non-governmental organizations with an aim to acknowledge the efforts of the human rights defenders around the world, as well as to reaffirm AF’s commitment in championing against human rights transgressions and upholding the rule of law in the country.
