Rukum West District Court Issues Landmark Verdict on Killings of Dalit Youths

6 December 2023, Kathmandu: Rukum West District Court on 5 December 2023 has issued a landmark verdict on the case of caste discrimination that had led to the massacre of six Dalit people from Bheri Municipality, Jajarkot district in May 2020.

The single bench of Judge Khadga Bahadur KC found 24 among the 34 accused to be guilty of being involved in the murder of six Dalit youths. All the convicted persons have been sentenced to life imprisonment.

The bench issued an additional sentence of two years of imprisonment and a fine of NPR 50,000 (Fifty Thousand) against some of the convicted for caste-based discrimination.

The massacre of Dalit youths occurred on 23 May 2020 when Nawaraj BK from Bheri Municipality of Jajarkot District went to his girlfriend's home in Soti, Rukum West, to elope with her. Nawaraj BK was accompanied by his 18 friends from the village among whom Sandeep Bishwakarma, Tikaram Sunar, Ganesh Budha, Lokendra Sunar and Ganesh Shahi were killed along with him by the girl's family members and fellow villagers.

Once they reached Soti, Nawaraj and his friends were surrounded by the villagers, scolded with caste-discriminatory words, beaten to death and their bodies were thrown in the Bheri river.
