National Consultation Unites Conflict Victims in Kathmandu Following Supreme Court Mandate
The event, attended by a total of 65 participants, served as a crucial platform for dialogue and collaboration in the aftermath of a landmark Supreme Court ruling.
Prompted by the Supreme Court's directive issued on March 11, 2024, regarding the formation of Transitional Justice (TJ) commissions, the consultation aimed to address pressing issues related to the implementation of transitional justice mechanisms. The court mandated the government to establish a recommendation committee within a month to nominate commissioners for the TJ commissions.
Additionally, it instructed the government to conduct a consultation with victim leaders within 15 days to outline a working mandate for the commissions during the appointment process.
In response to these directives, victim organizations received invitations from the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs for a joint meeting with government officials, including the Chief Secretary and Secretaries of the Law Ministry and TJ Commissions. Anticipating the need for a unified stance among victims nationwide, a National Consultation was deemed imperative before the scheduled meeting with government representatives.
The consultation provided a platform for victims to collectively formulate a national position in response to the evolving TJ process in Nepal. It facilitated discussions on ongoing developments and strategizing for the future. Civil society members also contributed by sharing their perspectives on the Supreme Court's ruling, fostering mutual understanding and collaboration between victims and civil society.
The event concluded with a renewed sense of unity and purpose among the victim community, underscoring the importance of collective action in advancing the transitional justice agenda in Nepal.
