AF, NA and CVWN Conduct 4-day Orientation Programme on WPS in Nepalgunj

8 August 2024, Kathmandu: Advocacy Forum-Nepal (AF), Nagarik Aawaz (NA) and Conflict Victim Women National Network (CVWN) conducted a four-day orientation training programme on women, peace and security (WPS) in Nepalgunj.

The training sessions featured the history of WPS, its background and understanding, present condition, laws governing transitional justice (TJ Act and amendment bills), local government's challenges in the implementation of the second national action plan (NAPII) and strategic plans for the implementation.

Participants in the event were engaged in role-play to understand the concept of WPS. They also conducted working sessions on building strategic action plans to implement NAPII.

CVWN Deputy Chairperson Gita Rasaili, Advocate Laxmi Pokharel and AF's Lumbini Province Senior Coordinator Advocate Basanta Gautam facilitated various sessions on the United Nations Security Council Resolutions 1325 and 1820. Bina Bhattarai, Deputy Mayor of Thakurbaba Municipality, described the work done in implementing NAPII. She informed that the municipality had started collecting victims' details and entering those details in the database through a coding method to maintain confidentiality.

On the third day of the programme, participants were taken for a field visit to Kumbhar Adda Memorial Park and Thakurbaba Municipality in Bardiya district. Kumbhar Adda Disappeared Combatants' Memorial Park in Barbardiya Municipality and Thakurbaba Municipality, in coordination with AF, facilitated the study visit for participants to gain knowledge about the progress achieved in WPS.

During the field visit, the participants said that such memorial parks are important to heal conflict victims' wounds and these initiatives need to be replicated in other places.

A total of 25 persons including conflict victims from Rolpa, Dang and Kailali districts, local government representatives, civil servants and civil society representatives participated in the programme.

This training programme was organized for local stakeholders under "Localization of Second National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security".
