Custodial Torture Up by 6.7%

5 March, 2011. Advocacy Forum has recorded a significant overall increase in the percentage of custodial torture between July and December 2010. The trend is 6.7% higher as compared to January to June 2010 which was recorded at 15.8 %.

7th Anniversary of Maina's Killing: Organizations Call Govt. to End Obstruction to Justice
17 February, 2011. Seven years after the arrest and killing of Maina Sunuwar, the Government of Nepal should take immediate steps, with the full cooperation of the Nepal Army, to ensure that criminal proceedings move forward, Advocacy Forum (AF), Amnesty International (AI), Human Rights Watch (HRW) and the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) said today.  Fifteen-year old Maina was brutally tortured to death by a group of army personnel back on 17 Feb, 2004.

Court Order DPO to Compensate Torture Survivor

15 February 2011. In what may be termed as one of the rare decisions by a Nepalese Court, the District court of Baglung has issued an order on 13 Feb, 2011, in the name of the District Police Office (DPO), Baglung, to provide compensation amounting to NRs 10,000/- to a torture survivor. In general, Nepalese courts refer directly to the state to provide compensation to torture victims.

Courts Order Compensation in Two Torture Cases

2 February 2011. The District Court of Ramechhap has issued an order yesterday to award compensation to the tune of NRs. 20,000/- to torture survivor Padam Maya Sunuwar and departmental actions against the perpetrators involved.  A corresponding verdict was also passed by Appellate Court of Baglung on 17 January 2011 in connection to a Torture Compensation (TCA) Case of Kamal Pun.

Victims knock HRC Door Ahead of UN Scrutiny Day

24 January 2011. The families of eight youths from Manau, Bardiya District, who were disappeared at the hands of security forces back in April 2002, have submitted today an individual communication to the United Nations Human Rights Committee (UN-HRC) with the help of Advocacy Forum-Nepal and the REDRESS Trust. The submission is timed to coincide with the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) of the Human Rights Council scheduled to kick off from tomorrow in Geneva.

Medicos Receive Training in Istanbul Protocol

Medicos Receive Training in Istanbul Protocol With an objective to build the capacity of doctors to better document torture, particularly interviewing torture survivors, Advocacy Forum (AF), in collaboration with REDRESS and Nepal Judicial Academy (NJA), organized a three-day training (7-10 January 2011) on Istanbul Protocol. Training also aimed to enhance knowledge on the consequences of torture from a medical, psychological and evidentiary perspective.
