AF Co-organized a Panel Discussion on: Conflict – related Sexual Violence in Nepal

To mark the 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence, Advocacy Forum ( AF) in collaboration with Human Rights and Justice Centre (HRJC), The Story Kitchen( TSK), International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), and Conflict Victim Women National Alliance (CVWNA) conducted a panel discussion titled ‘Conflict-related Sexual Violence in Nepal: Overlooked and Under-Investigated’ at Alfa House, New Baneshwor Kathmandu. The panel discussion was organized with an aim to bring into light, the cases of sexual violence that occurred during the ten year long armed conflict in Nepal and have dialogues on this subject so that they are not overlooked anymore. The program was attended by 45 participants (29 female, 16 male) representing various civil society organizations, law institutions and media. The participants unanimously agreed that the cases of conflict-related sexual violence is overlooked and neglected by the Government.

Advocacy Forum-Nepal convened a dialogue on the TJ process with Civil Society Organizations

On 9 December 2021, Advocacy Forum-Nepal convened a dialogue in Kathmandu among the members of the civil society organization intending to reinvigorate the discourse on the transitional justice process and to share and exchange the past and present experiences of the human rights defenders working on transitional justice. The Government's apathy towards reviving the mired transitional justice process has further pushed the peace process to an absolute impasse.

Kathmandu, 22 Nov 2021: To commemorate 15 years of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement and to mark the failure of the Government to fulfill its commitments pledged in the CPA, Advocacy Forum-Nepal organized interaction programs in various districts of the country- Morang, Pokhara, Banke, Rupandehi, Surkhet and Dhangadhi. The programs were attended by the conflict victims, representatives of Provincial Government, members of civil society organizations; human rights lawyers and media personnel. The program was organized to reinvigorate discussion among the stakeholders to enable transitional justice (TJ) process which has remained stagnant for the last 15 years.

Commemorating the 15 years of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement (CPA) – the agreement that formally ended the ten year long armed conflict between the Government of Nepal and the then Communist Party of Nepal- Maoists (CPN-M)- Advocacy Forum- Nepal (AF) along with victims’ groups and national and international human rights organizations, issued a Joint Press Statement titled “15 Years of Comprehensive Peace Agreement: Justice still Elusive” on 21 November 2021.

29 October 2021, Kathmandu: Advocacy Forum (AF) organized a workshop on ‘Medico-Legal Documentation of Torture and Sexual Violence’ at Alfa House, New Baneshwor Kathmandu on 29 October 2021. The program was conducted successfully with altogether 30 participants (9 Females and 21 Male) including doctors, police personnel, government attorneys, members of the Bar Association and representatives from civil cociety organizations.

AF Organized Consultation Meeting on Juvenile Justice in Nepal

1st October 2021, Kathmandu: AF organized a consultation meeting on “Child Rights and Juvenile Justice System in Nepal” in Alfa House, New Baneshwor Kathmandu on 1 October 2021. The event was chaired by AF’s Board Member Advocate Sitasharan Mandal and the Honorable Judge Raju Kumar Khatiwoda was the Chief Guest. In the meeting AF’s Legal Officer Kumar Prasad Thapaliya presented AF's data and findings collected from detention centers and Child Correction Homes. Advocate Rabindra Bhattarai and the district judge Raju Kumar Khatiwoda presented separate workpapers which were analyzed and commented by Advocate Ajaya Shankar Jha. AF’s lawyer Advocate Pushpa Raj Paudel facilitated the program. In the meeting altogether 30 participants (7 Female and 23 Male) including Police, Government Attorneys, defense lawyers, Central Child Welfare Board, representative of Child Correction Home and other persons from the concerned organization were participated in the event.

AF and Civil Society Organizations Submitted a Memorandum to Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs, recommended the Government to counter the COVID-19 Pandemic Situation

21 September 2021, Kathmandu: Advocacy Forum-Nepal in collaboration with Amnesty International Nepal, International Commission of Jurists (ICJ), Justice and Rights Institute Nepal (JuRI- Nepal) and International Network for Nepali Journalists (INNJA) handed over a submission to Minister for Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs enlisting a set of recommendations on dealing with COVID-19 pandemic. The submission provided the recommendations on the overall COVID-19 pandemic and particularly on i) quarantine and isolation facilities ii) access to health services during the COVID-19 pandemic iii) health worker-related issues iv) issues related to gender justice v) issues on violation of the right to freedom of expression vi) private health services and lastly on vii) vaccines.

With Advocacy Forum (AF) –Nepal’s coordination, Nepalgunj- High Court Bar Association, Nepalgunj and Banke District Court Bar Association organized a free Eye and Ear Check-up on 1 September 2021 for the children of Child Correction Home, Banke. Nepal Netra Jyoti Sangh, Banke, Fateh Bal Eye Hospital, Fultekra and Brinos Ear Care Center, Banke provided free check-up service in the camp.
