Victims' Solidarity for Justice

Victims' Solidarity for Justice In order to gather local and nation consensus against amnesty for serious human rights violations committed during the decade-long conflict, Advocacy Forum (AF), Conflict Victim Society for Justice (CVSJ) Baglung and Solidarity Group for Justice Western Regional Office, Pokhara jointly organized multifarious programs like photographs and book exhibition relating to the conflict and conflict victims, documentary on human rights issues, signature collection, memorandum submission. The programs started on 26 March 2012 and lasted up to 3 April 2012 in the premises of Dhaulagiri Multiple campus. It was observed on the occasion of Baglung Festival held every year at Chaitra Dashain.

TRC and DC to be Merged

TRC and DC to be Merged 20 April 2012. Three major political parties, UCPN (Maoist), CPN-UML and NC have agreed to merge Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and Disappearance Commission (DC) forming just one commission that looks into all issues relating to the conflict. The meeting of top leaders of those parties yesterday arrived at such a decision.

Letter Submitted to PM Regarding Torture Bill

19 April 2012. Advocacy Forum and REDRESS submitted a joint letter to the Prime Minister regarding the torture bill that is about to be tabled in the parliament. Welcoming the initiative taken by the government in criminalizing torture, the organizations have requested it to make the bill that complies with Nepal’s international obligations to human rights instruments. TRC and DC Should Meet International Standards: NHRC

19 April 2012. National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has sent a letter to the government recommending it to form Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) and Disappearance Commission (DC) that meet the international standard. In the letter dated 17 April and addressed to the Prime Minister Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, NHRC Chairman Kedarnath Upadhyaya has requested the PM to pay attention to international standard.

Consensus built to table TRC and DC Bills before Parliament

2 April 2012. Possibility to form the much-awaited Truth and Reconciliation (TRC) and Disappearance Commission (DC) has heightened as the top leaders of three major political parties- UCPN (Maoist), Nepali Congress (NC) and CPN (UML) - agreed on Saturday to entrust Ministry of Law and Justice with the responsibility to finalize the draft TRC and DC Bills.

Court Awards Compensation

29 March 2012. The District Court of Kathmandu has today issued an order to award torture survivor Mr. Bharat Sharma a compensation amounting to NRs. 20,000/- under the Torture Compensation Act (TCA) 1996. However, the court has refrained from issuing departmental action against the perpetrator because the individual perpetrator was not identified.

DC former Verdict Quashed

29 March 2012. The Patan Appellate Court has today quashed the order of the Kathmandu District Court vis-à-vis case forward of torture survivor Arjun Gurung to the Court Mediation Centre. A joint bench of Justice Aakraj Acharya and Hari Kumar Pokhrel has issued an order to reverse the former order of the district court.

AF and AHRC Jointly Submit Separate Open Letters to Big Three against Blanket Amnesty

9 March 2012. In three separate open letters issued yesterday, the Asian Human Rights Commission (AHRC) and Advocacy Forum (AF) have urged the leaders of big three political parties, Nepali Congress (Click Letter To Koirala for the full text), the Communist Party of Nepal (UML) (Click Letter To Khanal for the full text) and the United Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) (Click Letter To Dahal for the full text) not to include provisions providing blanket amnesty to perpetrators of grave human rights violations in the text of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission Bill.
