Review of the Universal Periodic Review recommendations-1 Torture
1 June 2011. A joint Statement by Advocacy Forum and the Asian Human Rights Commission. On 25 January 2011, the state of human rights in Nepal was assessed for the first time under the United Nations Human Rights Council's Universal Periodic Review. The UPR process was established by the UN General Assembly on 15 March 2006 through resolution 60/251 to "review the fulfilment by each State of its human rights obligations and commitments." During the sessions, peer countries engaged in a dialogue on key human rights issues such as torture, forced disappearances, security of human rights defenders, discrimination, freedom of expression, and the overarching problem of impunity.

SC Issues Show Cause Order against Controversial Appointment of Minister Sapkota
30 May, 2011. In its first ever order asking the suspension of a serving minister, the Supreme Court has directed the government of Nepal to submit a written clarification within fifteen days why the Minister of Information and Communication, Mr. Agni Prasad Sapkota, should not be removed from his position.
Torture Survivors Awarded Compensation
26 May 2011. The District Court of Dolakha has issued two corresponding orders on 22 May 2011 to award compensation amounting NRs 15000/- to torture survivors Mahima Kusule and Peema Dorje Tamang. Both victims were severely tortured under the allegation of theft by police personnel.
AF-REDRESS submit Key Recommendations vis-à-vis proposed Criminal Code
19 April 2011. Advocacy Forum and the Redress Trust (REDRESS) submitted today a joint summary of key recommendations in relation to the proposed bills for a new Penal Code, Criminal Procedure Code and Sentencing Act at the Ministry of Law, Justice and Parliamentary Affairs. Besides welcoming the government's bid to table the trio bills, both organizations raised concerns over some of the provisions that explicitly fall short of international law to which Nepal is a party and of provisions in the Interim Constitution.
Court Decides in Favour of Torture Victim
11 April 2011. The District Court of Bardiya issued an order on 6 April, 2011, to award compensation amounting NRs 50,000/- to torture survivor Chinku Tharu and departmental action against the perpetrator involved.
Supplemental Complaint Filed in Muktinath Murder Case
8 April 2011. A supplemental complaint was lodged yesterday with the legal assistance of Advocacy Forum vis-à-vis the execution-style murder of Muktinath Adhikari, the then principal of Panini Sanskrit Secondary School, Lamjung, by Maoist Cadres back on 16 January, 2002.
Appellate Court orders DPO to Step Up Investigation in Lohar case
23 March 2011. The Appellate Court of Nepalgunj has issued an order of mandamus to District Police Office (DPO), Nepalgunj, Bhojbhagawanpur-based Area Police Office (APO) and District Attorney Office, Banke, to carry out prompt and effective investigation vis-à-vis the extra judicial murder of Patandin Lohar.
Custodial Torture Up by 6.7%
5 March, 2011. Advocacy Forum has recorded a significant overall increase in the percentage of custodial torture between July and December 2010. The trend is 6.7% higher as compared to January to June 2010 which was recorded at 15.8 %.

18 Feb 2011. Final round of psychosocial workshop to human rights defenders conducted by Advocacy Forum concluded in Kathmandu today. Attended by 19 human rights defenders of Advocacy Forum, the workshop was supported by the Swiss Agency for Development and Cooperation (SDC).
