6 March 2022, Kathmandu: Advocacy Forum-Nepal organized a two days Inception Program on 3-4 March 2022 in Nagarkot, Bhaktapur. AF staff from the provincial and central offices attended the program. Advocacy Forum-Nepal Distributed Educational Materials to Child Correction Home in Banke

21 February 2022, Banke: On 18 Feb 2022, Advocacy Forum-Nepal distributed educational material worth twenty thousand to Child Correction Home (CCH) in Banke. While facilitating the event AF lawyer Basanta Gautam emphasized the need of an overall teaching learning environment in the CCH along with the inclusion of technical knowledge. AF has provided 24 dozen copies and 100 pieces of pens to the children as requested by the CCH with an aim to address the gaps in teaching learning activities.

AF welcomes Patan High Court, Hetauda Bench’s Decision on Raj Kumar Chepang’s Case

21 February 2022, Kathmandu: Reversing the decision of the Chitwan District Court, on 20 February 2022, the Joint- Bench of Chandi Raj Dhakal and Nagendra Karna of Patan High Court, Hetauda Bench has sentenced life imprisonment to security personnel of Nepal Army (NA), Chiran Kumar Buda, stating him guilty for the murder of 24-year-old Raj Kumar Chepang, of Rapti Municipality, Ward No.2 of Chitwan District.

AF along with ICJ convened a Reflection Meeting on Nepal’s Transitional Justice Process

18 February 2022, Kathmandu: On 18 February 2022, Advocacy Forum-Nepal jointly with the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) convoked a reflection meeting among victims of armed conflict and civil societies as a follow-up to the dialogue on the TJ process with civil society organizations organized on 9 December 2021. Both the discussions were organized with an objective to reinvigorate the discourse on the transitional justice process and to share a common strategy in advancing the stalled transitional justice process. The reflection meeting commenced with the unveiling of two of ICJ’s publications entitled Decision of Supreme Court on Transitional Justice and Right to Remedy by Honorable Kalyan Shrestha former Chief Justice of Nepal.

Unpacking the Provisions of Torture in Criminal Code of Nepal and its Compliance with International Standards

February 2022: Advocacy Forum-Nepal published a briefing paper titled ‘Unpacking the Provisions of Torture in Criminal Code of Nepal and its Compliance with International Standards.’ The report briefs the legal provisions related to torture in the national legal framework, particularly the Criminal Code 2017 and analyzes its compliance with international human rights standards. It highlights the shortcomings in the Criminal Code such as the limited definition of inhuman and degrading treatment, insufficient sanctions and penalties, and inadequate reparations provisions, among others.

Nine Juvenile Cases Deferred by Rupandehi District Court

9 February 2022, Rupandehi:  In the last four months, the Rupandehi District Court has deferred sentences in nine juvenile cases. This is a steep increase from the two cases that were deferred last year. This increase in deferral is the result of interaction program organized by Advocacy Forum-Nepal on 17 September 2021 on issues related to diversion and deferral of the cases among the stakeholders of criminal justice system.

AF Organized a Virtual Meeting Among Child Correction Homes

February 1, 2022, Kathmandu: Advocacy Forum - Nepal (AF) organized a virtual meeting with the In-Charges/representatives of Child Correction Homes (CCHs) in Nepal to share its new initiative and map the implementing capacities and the need of CCHs regarding the installation of a communication system. AF's Executive Director Om Prakash Sen Thakuri shared AF's plan to install a communication corner in every Child Correction Home (8 in total) to allow the juveniles to communicate with their family members, lawyers, court as well as to conduct virtual classes to the children kept in the Child Correction Homes.

Representatives from Bank District Court, National Human Rights Commission, Banke District Court Bar Association among others were present in the program.
