SC Orders to Continue Investigation on AIG Rana's Case

12 July 2011. In its verdict passed today, the Supreme Court (SC) has today issued an order to continue investigation on the case related to AIG Kuber Singh Rana who was promoted to the post of AIG by the government on 23 June 2011. Rana is charged of his alleged involvement in the disappearance and subsequent killing of 5 students in janakpur on 8 October 2003.
A joint bench decision of Justice Tahir Ali Ansari and Bharat Bahadur Karki stated that investigation be continued by the Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) in the capacity of an investigation officer and report the Court and the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) every month on the major developments made in the investigation.

The court has, however, refrained from issuing order to retract his promotion as sought by the petitioner because the accusation on Rana has not yet been proved. The SC has also decided to withdraw its interim order of 5 July in which the Apex Court had barred Rana from discharging his duties as AIG.

Advocacy Forum (AF) had legally assisted the victim to file an FIR in DPO Dhanusha on 9 July 2006. After the Court's decision AF Chairperson Madira Sharma said: "we have worked in this case for seven years and now we are hopeful that investigation will proceed as per the Court's decision".
