Torture Still Continues in Nepal: AF

26 June 2016. On the occasion of UN International Day in Support of Torture Victims-2016, Advocacy Forum (AF) released annual torture report entitled “Continuing Torture During -2015” on 25th June 2016 in Kathmandu. The report was jointly released by  Govinda Sharma Poudel, commissioner of National Human Rights Commission, Superintendent of Police Puja Singh, Human Rights Unit of Nepal Police, advocate Chudamani Acharya, Chairperson of AF, Charan Prasai, Senior human rights activist and Suman Adhikari, Chairman of CVCP amidst the presence of more than 80 participants from victims community, National Human Rights Commission, Office of the Attorney General, public prosecutors, defence lawyers, human rights defenders,media persons and representatives from national and international human rights organizations. Likewise, the report was released in Morang, Kaski, Rupandehi, Banke and Kanchanpur districts.

Court Confirms Army Lieutenant being Involved in Torture and Orders Action against the accused and Compensation to Survivor

On 16 March 2016, Bardiya District Court issued an ordered to compensate 14 year old juvenile, who was subjected to torture in Narsingha Gan of Nepal Army custody. The court has ordered the government to provide NPR 50,000 as compensation to victim, making perpetrator to pay personally NPR 2,000 and ordered the Government of Nepal to take departmental action against the perpetrators, Lieutenant Kavindra Thapa and Lance Corporal (Pyuth) Man Bahadur Khadka.

 Kathmandu, 17 Feb 2016: Commemorating the 12th death anniversary of Maina Sunuwar, the participants stressed to ensure prosecution to the perpetrators involved and jusice to the victim family. On 17 February 2004, a 15 year old girl Maina was illegally detained, brutally tortured and killed by the then Royal Nepalese Army and buried inside the compound of Panchkhal Army Barracks in Kavre district.

Kavre Court Ordered to Revive Maina’s Case

12 January 2016, Kathmandu. Responding to the application filed by Devi Sunwar, Kavre District Court, Dhulikhel on 12 January 2016 issued an order to revive Maina’s case who was arrested  and arbitrarily killed on 17 February, 2004 by the then  RNA . Devi Sunwar, victim’s mother filed an application seeking revival of the case and punishment to the alleged perpetrators: Colonel Babi Khatri, Sunil Prasad Adhikari, Niranjan Basnet and Amit Pun.The case had been adjourned at Kavre District Court for the last 2 years.
