Court Awards Compensation

29 March 2012. The District Court of Kathmandu has today issued an order to award torture survivor Mr. Bharat Sharma a compensation amounting to NRs. 20,000/- under the Torture Compensation Act (TCA) 1996. However, the court has refrained from issuing departmental action against the perpetrator because the individual perpetrator was not identified.
Mr. Bharat Sharma, 30, son of Sita Ram Sharma and Geeta Devi Sharma, a permanent resident of Sagarmatha VDC -4, Ramchowk, Janakpur, Dhanusha District temporarily living at Tahachal, Kathmandu was arrested on the allegation of theft by the police on 10 August 2011. A carpenter by profession, Mr. Sharma was tortured by a group of unidentified police personnel that came from Tahachal Ward Police Office.

Mr. Sharma was legally assisted by Advocacy Forum (AF) to file a case with the court.
