AF, HRJC and ICJ Organized Panel Discussion on Transitional Justice Process
Coinciding with the World Social Forum events in Kathmandu, the panel discussion titled "Exploring the Tapestry: Unravelling the Threads of Transitional Justice and Peace Process" featured four experts from Nepal, Sri Lanka and Palestine.
Suman Adhikari, an armed conflict victim and human rights activist from Nepal, talked about the conflict, peace agreement, and formation of the truth commission without taking victims' concerns in stride. He lamented the government's tactics of delay and denial of justice which has frustrated the victims.
Transitional justice expert and AF's Founder Dr. Mandira Sharma shared her views about the need for TJ mechanism in post-conflict context and asserted that TJ ensures no one is above the law. She discussed how Nepal government has failed to address the UN Human Rights Committee decisions and recommendations to provide justice to victims.
Nalini Ratna Raja, a Women's Human Rights Defender from Sri Lanka, informed the audience about gender and minorities in conflict and peace in her country. She said that many women were raped during various conflicts in Sri Lanka after its independence but these women have been deprived of justice. She remarked that the majority Singhalese are against the TJ process saying that it was like punishing the war heroes.
Al-Haq Centre for Applied International Law Chairperson Dr. Wesam Ahmed talked about the genocide being perpetrated against the Palestinians in Gaza. He explained how the colonial powers have been openly flouting international law by allowing massive violations of the human rights of the Palestinians and how they are deprived of a transitional justice process.
All four panellists answered the questions raised by the participants during the open floor discussion.
